Top ten sci-fi movies

Via the BBC

  1. Serenity
  2. Star Wars
  3. Blade Runner
  4. Planet of the Apes
  5. The Matrix
  6. Alien
  7. Forbidden Planet
  8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  9. The Terminator
  10. Back to the Future

And I've actually seen all of them!

I'm not sure how Back to the Future qualifies as Sci-Fi...

Black Sheep

On a vast New Zealand sheep station, a reckless genetic engineering experiment goes horribly wrong, turning sheep into bloodthirsty killers.

You have to watch the trailer to understand.

We Are Marshall

Thing1, thing2, and I went to the movies this morning (the local AMC is $5.00 for the first showing of each movie before noon) and saw We Are Marshall. The true story of the Marshall University football team and it's return to play after a plane crash in 1970 kill all but 3 players and 1 coach.

The story is inspiring and well done. The actors do an excellent job of portraying the anger and hurt that overtook the town and university after the crash and the anger and resentment the return to playing football brought.

4 of 5 stars

Radio

On the way to the movies with Thing1 and Thing2 (We Are Marshall) today I realized that Thing1 is listening to the same music I listened to when I was 21 on the same radio station. Scary

At the movies

Thing2 is off from school this week and since Thing1 is working over Christmas break I took the day off to spend it with Thing2. Just Dad and daughter out to the movie. And what did we see? Charlotte's Web. This was an enjoyable film for just about anyone. I was kind of waiting for a PETA moment but it never happened. Perfect for the whole family.

Tonight we watched Invincible. Based on the true story of Vince Papale's rise from bar tender to Philadelphia Eagle this was an entertaining movie. (Thing2 had been pushing John Tucker Must Die but I wanted to send this movie back to Netflix) Invincible is worth the rental.

Black Friday

It was a simple plan. Get up at 4:00am, head over to the local Best Buy, and get one of the 42 inch Panasonic plasma TVs that were available for 999.00. 2 out of 3 isn't bad...

Thing1 and I were up and at Best Buy a little before 5:00 am. The line was around the store. With only 5 in stock we knew the chance of getting what we wanted was zero. Hmmm... no line in front of Circuit City. We headed over there and the store was full of people. We couldn't even get to the movies we wanted to buy. Oh well.

We walked down to Dicks Sporting Goods. The store wasn't open yet. Ok walk down to Wal-Mart and kill some time. Lots of crazy people! Back to Dicks.

As we walked to Dicks I told Thing1 that, if they had the rifle I was looking for in stock, he was going to buy his first gun. Alas it wasn't in stock. So I bought some ammo and off we went to Target.

We got to Target just before they opened. Walked in and got the movies and games we wanted and were out the door in 5 minutes. Grabbed a couple of bagels and Panera and headed home.

In retrospect the long lines at Best Buy and Circuit City saved me almost $2000.00 on Friday. However that money will be spent soon enough on the 40 inch LCD that was at the top of our list.

Be safe out there. Shopping can be a contact sport.

The Cavern

SarahK warned me. Did I listen? Nah. I got The Cavern from Netflix and watched it. Does it make my worse movies ever list? Close but not quite.

A perfect example of a movie whose director spent too much time watching The Blair Witch Project. Lots of shakey cameras, flash lighting, and crying. Toss in a monster (or something like it) and you get this movie.

It could have been much better. Just a bit more plot development and less of the stupid effects and this could have been a decent movie. Well - except the ending stunk.

Bad Movies

We've all seen at least one. A movie that was either so bad that you couldn't make it the whole way through or you watched the whole thing waiting for something good to happen.

SarahK, who's now over the hill, has a post about a movie her sister-in-law worked on.

That led me to think of my list of bad movies. In no particular order:

Reds
The Thin Red Line
Chicago
Moulon Rouge
Lethal Weapon 4
Napolen Dynamite

I'm sure more will come to me later.

Vacation - Day 6 - July 12th

A rainy day. Seems like most of the eastern U.S.is getting rain. We're going to the movies and see Pirates of the Caribean 2.

Twas an excellent movie. The wife thought it was a bit gross in places (Davy Jones has morphed a bit) but the story cruised on. The ending is a good setup for the third movie. Came back and went bowling and swimming. Managed to have a contact pop out so my swimming was cut short. Luckily the wife had her contact case so I took them both out and put then in her case. Twas blurry on the way back to the room. Without tequila...

Watching the local news and we're seeing that some of the things we wanted to do are still having water problems from a few weeks ago. Time to rearrange the plans. Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.

Stupid Parents

Thing1 called last night to say hi and to tell me about his latest movie experience - Silent Hill. While he said he enjoyed the movie there were, once again, little kids (as he put it they were as tall as the seat back) there with Mommy and Daddy.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. The parents that is.

This works too

We did something similar with Thing2 when Thing1 came home for spring break. $20.00 went a long way to keeping the peace over sitting in the love seat when watching movies.

Movies and Kids

I like action movies. You know the kind where stuff gets blown up. These movies can be violent, bloody, and full of adult language. The wife isn't much of a fan of them (anymore) but Thing1 is. We've been going to see them together since I felt he was old enough - that was around age 14 or so depending on content.

Once thing that has bothered both of us was the number of kids that were at these movies. By kids I mean those aged 4, 5, or even younger. I'm not sure when we first noticed it but I think it was at We Were Soldiers. There were several very young kids there - with dad. This was a bloody movie and totally inappropriate for kids. I've seen it several times since then as has Thing1. I used to think we were the only ones bothered by this till Thing1 brought this to my attention.

While it's good to see other parents getting upset I have to wonder whats going through the mind(s) of the parents who allow their kids to see these movies? Even now with Thing2, at age 14, I still see any questionable movies before I allow her to. If I don't think it's appropriate she doesn't see it. The only real time we've had a issue was with Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ. While I think ever Christian should see this movie I felt at that time (2004) that she wasn't ready for it. I'm still not sure. We may watch it together before Easter. At least at home I can skip a few of the parts that she shouldn't see.

As for those who take little kids to R rated movies - please stop. Hire a baby sitter. Wait for the DVD release. Just don't take the little ones along where they don't belong.

The Day After

The Oscars.

After watching Walk the Line (excellent movie - highly recommended) the wife wanted to watch the Academy awards. We'd already been treated to George Clooney's explanation as to why Hollyweird is so much better and more enlightened that the rest of us during a ice cream break that I wasn't expecting much. I was right but not in the way I expected. No political jokes from Jon (I'm really not this boring) Stewart, no political speeches from the award recipients. Just lots of thank you's to the right people. Very strange.

Ann Althouse's view of the Oscars was most interesting as she picked up on a number of things I didn't. It's a good view for people like me that didn't watch and let her suffer through. Be sure to read her morning after thoughts as well.

Did I like any of it? Sure - Jennifer Garner. Salma Hayek. Reese Witherspoon. Rachel Weisz. All looked beautiful. Alot of the other female stars looked like they hadn't eaten in a few weeks. Not sure what Hollyweird sees in skin and bones. Lots of pictures available at Yahoo.

As for awards - I havn't seen any of the nominated movies so I can't comment on them. I have Crash in my netflix queue so we'll see. The other movies - no real desire to see any of them. Best actor - I shocked that Joaquin Phoenix didn't win. Not surprised but shocked. He gets into character with such depth that he's just amazing. Maybe if Johnny Cash had been gay??? Best actress - Reese. She was impressive. Her range from movies like Legally Blonde to Walk the Line shows a lot of promise for her career. The rest - didn't see them.

I'm bummed I missed the penguins!

Sky High

I've always like Kurt Russell movies. From Disney movies to Snake Plisken to Miracle - he's always seems to bring forward a enjoyable character.

Since the wife was visiting her dad in the hospital Thing2 and I watched Sky High. I know it didn't get great reviews but it's a fun family friendly movie. Older kids and adults will figure out the plot but we both enjoyed the movie.

Without Remorse

One of my favorite Tom Clancy novels is Without Remorse, or as I describe it - How Clark became Clark. It was an excellent read with only a small reference to Jack Ryan. I had always thought that, if the screenplay followed the book, it would make an excellent movie.

Thing1 pointed out to me today that John Singleton has signed on to do Without Remorse. Great director. Boyz n the Hood is one of those movies that you need to see.

Now we just need Clark. And no Ben Affleck.

Shopping Fun

I don't like to shop. Well I don't like to wander around aimlessly looking for things to buy. I prefer to do with a list and a plan. That was today...

First stop was CompUSA for a 250GB SATA drive. $60.00 after rebate. In stock and in the car in 10 minutes. Next stop was Circuit City. There was a couple of movies for 9.44 each that I wanted. In and out in under 10 minutes. Over to Dicks Sporting Goods for ammo and a Weaver scope mount. 10 minutes later I had 250 rounds of 9mm and the mount in my car. Only a couple more stops.

Valli's Market. Yummy stuff. Picked up some stuff for Christmas dinner and lunch this week. One more store.

Menards was to be my last scheduled stop. Needed a new lift cable for the garage door. None in stock! :-( Off to the Home Depot. In stock! Picked up a spring safety cable set too. Used the self check out and I was on my way in under 5 minutes. Time to go home and play.

Brokeback Mountain

Normally I like Heath Ledger movies (Ten Things I Hate About You is great) but this is one that I'll be passing on as some of the content just isn't for me. But whats funny is the advertising (Ann Althouse is talking about it). Everyone knows that one of the plot lines is the relationship between the two cowboys but if one looks at the Oscar ads there is no mention of it.

Another thing - is this just a rehash of Making Love? I did see that movie way back when but it was not what we thought it was going to be.
