An Interesting Day
Thing2 is on spring break starting today. She got to start by getting her braces off!!! She still has a semi-permanent retainer and one that comes out easily but no braces. The smile is awesome!
After she got home from the orthodontist a boy showed up. Not just any boy but a boyfriend! Grr Arg. The wife dropped them off at a local pizza place so they could have lunch. When I got home they were sitting in the living room talking. I sat down and we talked. The boy was polite at all times. Asked about where I worked and what we did there. When he reached out and took Thing2's hand I asked him if he liked old swords. It took a second but then he let go. I went on with the story of the sword my dad gave me years ago. He looked at little worried when I talked about the blood stains on the blade :-)
I took him home around 5:00. When he said good bye he said to expect to see more of him...
On the other hand when I mentioned to my wife that I needed a new gun ... she didn't argue...

Home Defense Weapon

Search for missing woman turns into murder probe
From the Daily Herald:
- The desperate search for a missing Villa Park woman turned into a murder investigation after police found her body hidden in the trunk of a car in her garage.
Detectives are questioning a close friend of Rebecca “Becky” Klein’s to determine her possible involvement in the 32-year-old woman’s slaying.

She was last seen Friday, March 16, 2007 around 7:00 a.m. in Villa Park, Illinois. Becky did not show up to work Friday morning, which was very uncharacteristic, and her boss called Becky's family out of concern. This prompted an immediate search of the neighborhood. Becky's work van was found abandoned blocks from her house. The van was unlocked with Becky's purse inside and the keys still in the ingnition. Police were contacted. Local law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the disappearance. Family, friends, police and local media are asking for the public's help.
Top-right is a recent picture of Becky and the following is a physical description of her as of 3/16/07:
- Age: 32
- Height: 5'4"
- Weight: 140-150 lbs
- Eyes: Hazel
- Hair: Dark brown, shoulder length

Go Tour
What a night. Since Thing1 was going to be home for Spring Break I got tickets for the four of us to see Stellar Kart, Kutless, and the Newsboys at Life Changers International Church. This was a first for the wife as she's not really a fan of Christian music - unless it's in the green book. Thing1 had seen Stellar Kart and Kutless before so he had given us a preview of what to expect.
Thing1 and I got there early as it's a general admission show. We still ended up 5 rows from the back but stage center - which is ok as the auditorium is fairly small. Thing2 had to get something from the bands - it's just the way she is. Ended up with a Newsboys hat and buttons from Stellar Kart. Nothing from Kutless. At 8:00 the show began...
Stellar Kart is full of energy. Nice tight music and excellent vocals with meaningful lyrics (life is good but eternal life is better).
Thing2 captured a bit of one of her favorite songs.
They only played 6 songs but the energy was awesome.
After a 10 minute break Kutless came on. I wasn't expecting much as Thing1 had a bad review. They were great. Excellent mix of ballads and good old fashioned rock and roll.
And the it was time for the Newsboys. Paul Coleman came out and talked a bit while the stage was being changed. Paul discussed the Newsboys participation with Global Tribe to end poverty around the world. A few minutes later the Newsboys hit the stage!
I loved it. So did Thing2. Thing1 and the wife - not so much.

iPod's in the car
Since I got an iPod for Christmas I've been using it for most of my listening. Same with the wife. This was great at work or out walking. In the car - well that was a different story.
I started with a Kensington FM modulator from Amazon for the wife. Decent sound but there were too many stations around here so static and interference was a problem. I kept looking around and ended up at my old standby from a long time ago - Crutchfield. A few minutes there and I had a Harman Kardon Drive + Play on the way. I added the in-line modulator to maximize quality. After spending a Saturday afternoon putting it in her van she's a happy camper. Sound quality is pretty good with near zero interference. The wired remote makes it easy to select music.
For my car I did something a little different. Back at Crutchfield I found the USA SPEC iPod® Interface. Another afternoon spent hooking it up to the stereo (hidden in the trunk) and running a cable to the dash where the actual interface resides (behind the existing stereo control) my iPod is accessible as if it were the factory CD changer. Very nice.
Both products and Crutchfield are highly recommended.

Another MG Concert
Thats what the wife was up to this weekend. She was off with her sister, her niece, and a friend to see Montgomery Gentry at the Holiday Star Theater. Since she won't drive to Indiana, Thing2 and I got to go along and hang out with my sister-in-laws husband.
Before the show they managed to run into the K-Man. He plays keyboards for the boys. The wife had bought a bottle of Wild Bunch wine as a gift.
Then it was off to meet other MG fans at a local bar and then on to the show.
Afterwards they managed to close down the bar in the hotel. Good thing they had booked a room so they didn't have to drive anywhere.
As for the me, thing2, and Matt - well our day wasn't as exciting.

Came into work early (first one in the building!) figuring I'd get at least 1.5 hours of truly quiet time to work.

Open the door to the office and I hear - splot, splot, splot. Hmmm. Turn on the lights and look in the cube next to mine and there is water dripping by the window. I move the the paperwork and circuit boards out of the way, dry things up, and put a couple of buckets to catch the water. Called up the building manager and left him a message as well.
Turns out the that ice forms on the support beam above the window and, through various factors, picked today to melt. Nothing can be done. Great design...

Its easy to think that the show would be just another teen drama but it is much more. I got hooked at the beginning of season 2 and had to buy season 1 just to see what I missed. Great writing with lots of pop culture tossed in.

Rangers lead the way
Sick child gets wish to train with Rangers
Thing1 lives with CF. Just over 15 years since his diagnosis. After visiting the Air Force Academy on vacation when he was in high school he started emailing the admissions staff to get details on exactly what he needed to do to try for an appointment. I had to break the news to him that he was medically unfit to serve. Tis a shame as he would have made a great officer.
Kudos to the Army Rangers and Make-A-Wish for making this happen.

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — Weakened by his lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, 14-year-old Riley Woina dreams of being strong like the war heroes he watches in movies.
The Army’s 6th Ranger Training Battalion on Eglin Air Force Base recently helped him realize this unusual dream.
Susan Woina joked that her son could have taken his Plymouth, Conn., family to Walt Disney World or gone on a shopping spree through the Make-A-Wish Foundation instead of spending a week crawling in the mud with soldiers in the Florida Panhandle.
“You always want what you cannot have and he’ll never be able to join the Army because of his cystic fibrosis, so of course he wants that more than anyone else would. He would join the Army today if he could,” she said.

The Flag on Mt. Suribachi
Blackfive has a post up on the flag raising that occurred 62 years ago today.
Dad was a Marine during WWII. He never talked about what he did or saw. When I was young his Marine buddies would drop by and talk for a bit - usually in the garage. If I wandered out there to see what was going on they would get quiet as soon as I entered and start back up after I left. I guess it was something that only those who experienced it could share.

Smart Boy
Thing1 called as I got home (just before the email problems) and had some interesting news. He's officially a senior. He has enough credits already so he can get a senior parking sticker and get a spot thats 1/2 mile closer to his dorm.
A Message from God
As we walked into the Ash Wednesday service tonight we were handled a couple of pieces of paper. The wife got two of these:

I can't read my email!
Those were Thing2's first words to me after I walked in the door today from work. No 'Hi Daddy' or anything pleasant. I can't read my email. Since I have a domain registered for the family I figured the provider had a problem. Sure enough - the admin web page had a 'unplanned outage' message up. A couple of minutes later everything was working and Thing2 was happy. Life was good.
Hopefully tomorrows greeting will be 'Hi Dad!'

- Testing Garlic: A New Weapon in the Fight Against CF Lung Infections? February 2, 2007 A novel approach to fighting Pseudomonas infections in the lungs of people with CF is being tested in a new pilot study in the United Kingdom. Volunteers with CF will be given capsules of either garlic extract or a placebo (olive oil) for two months and the levels of bacteria in their sputum will be measured. The potential of garlic extract as an antipseudomonal agent was supported by the results of a study conducted in Denmark. In that study, exposure of Pseudomonas to garlic extract made the bacteria more sensitive to tobramycin and to immune defense system cells. The garlic extract also provided mice with significant protection from Pseudomonas lung infections. The new trial is being conducted at the University of Nottingham under the direction of Dr. Alan Smyth. Safety of the extract will be examined in addition to any potentially positive effects on weight and lung function.
Thing1 lives with CF. It's been 15 years since he was diagnosed and, thank God, he has no lung problems. On the other hand he is a big fan of garlic...

The scales that the blood bank uses track the time of donation. Last year I got into a race with one of the engineers here at work. He finished in 5:05 - I have a 5:14. I guess with no competition it was hard to race...

krbtgt and NO_AUTH_DATA_REQUIRED
These two should not be mixed.
NO_AUTH_DATA_REQUIRED is a flag that can be added to the UserAccountControl attribute for an Active Directory user object. This flag will keep Privilege Attribute Certificate(PAC) data from being added to service tickets. This can be useful when setting up cross realm trusts between AD and a MIT Kerberos realm.
We're working on setting up single sign on for the Windows clients in our AD forest so that upon logging in users will get credentials for the AD domain, the MIT realm, AFS, and a Kerberos based Certificate Authority (KCA). Everything was good except for the tickets AD was returning to the MIT KDC - they were too large to build AFS tickets. So the developer suggested implementing NO_AUTH_DATA_REQUIRED on the service accounts used for KCA and KDC access. No problem there. But I misread his note and also set the krbtgt account with this option.
Nothing bad happened at first. But overnight some systems stopped processing GPOs. And a couple of DCs started throwing logon errors. Nothing made sense till I read a bit more on the use of the krbtgt account and realized what a mistake I had made. Backed out the change and rebooted the two DCs that were having problems. A couple of other servers needed attention as well.
Some things just shouldn't be mixed.

Happy Valentines Day
Heard this on the radio (K-Love) this morning:
- The priest Valentine was arrested and put into prison. He was incarcerated because he did not worship the Roman gods. Snow Day - sorta
We had winter storm warnings. Big deal - here in Northern Illinois we get these all the time. When I left for work we had gotten maybe an inch of snow. Enough to cancel school for Thing2 (she was happy - after she got back from the bus stop...) We had the ok to stay home and take a day of vacation if we wanted to. The weather didn't seem so bad so off I went.
My normal 25 minute drive took 50. People were taking it easy - except for the 4WD trucks. For some reason they thought my bumper was a good place to hang out... Most people came in - except for the ones with fancy new 4WD trucks. Seemed strange to me.
Left a little early figuring I could clean up the driveway from the inch or so of snow real quick and have some time to relax. Hah! The driveway had anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow on it. Some drifts were deeper. Almost 2 hours later I had mine as well as my neighbors done.
Buffy, on the other hand, had the right idea for a snowy day!

2007 Chicago Auto Show
It was a family affair this year. Thing2, who is normally at Primetime, went to the show with us. Since she's in high school now Primetime is in March so off we went to pick Thing1 up at school and head into Chicago for the Auto Show.
I buy the tickets online and we tend to get there early so we can park inside the McCormick Place garage. While it's still cold you are usually only a few steps from being inside the building.
We wore our colors. Even though the Gross Rexmann (aptly named by a vendor we talked to) choked we are proud of the season the Bears had. The jerseys started a few conversations as well.
The wife doesn't have a jersey. Maybe next year.
We started at Ford. The Edge crossover is an interesting car. It rides a little higher (which the wife likes but isn't as thirsty as a truck. Still the wife has a thing for F150's. Someday... unless the Edge steals her away.
This is more my style of truck...
There were Cub Scouts everywhere. Pinewood Derby racing was happening. Great fun for all.
And we were off to Chevrolet.
I've been a fan of the Corvette for as long as I can remember. The Vette is the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 this year. It's a beauty.
The Ron Fellows edition Z06 is more my style. If only I had 80 grand burning a hole in my pocket...
Thing1 is thinking ahead to graduation. He's been thinking about a truck but for him something like the HHR is more his style. It's sharp looking, the price is right, and can haul larger items when necessary.
The new Camaro is a thing of beauty. I was never a huge fan of the Camaro but this just looks awesome! Hopefully Chevrolet will price it right.
The Volt is a pure electric car. 40 miles per charge. ComEd would love me!
We kept wandering. Lots of beautiful cars. Finally made it to the US Army exhibit. As usual it was full of people. The even brought along a couple of choppers.

Thing2 wanted a Army baseball cap. All they wanted in return was contact information. She was hesitant at first but the recruiter was polite and said that all it meant was that she would be contacted when she was a senior. That was ok with her.
We spent quite a bit of time there just looking at the toys the Army had brought along. One Sargent commented on the jerseys we were wearing so we ended up talking for 10 minutes. 17 year veteran. Airborne Ranger. Been there and done that. An incredibly nice guy. Every soldier we talked to was enjoyable to converse with. All had a little story. Thing2 was surprise by the female soldier who started telling us about being sent to journalism school while in the Army. I think Thing2 thought all the soldiers were shooters. It may have opened up her mind a bit.
The Air Force had a much smaller exhibit. But one of their Nextel cars was there.
International had some of their trucks on hand. Thing2 just had to have her picture taken with this one.
This Pontiac Solstice was just beautiful. You just wanted to take it for a ride.
Shell had one of it's race cars there.
And quite possibly the strangest race car. A Toyota Camry Nascar racer. I know Toyota has been in truck racing for awhile but it just seemed strange to me.
One other car jumped out at me. The Scion Xb. I think the current one is the ugliest thing out there. The 2008 model is a huge improvement. It looks like the roof line has been lowered and the doors brought up a bit. It doesn't look like a box anymore. Well done.
And then we were off. It started getting real crowded so we headed out to lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings and then back to drop Thing1 at school. Almost 200 miles of driving. Time for a nap.
I buy the tickets online and we tend to get there early so we can park inside the McCormick Place garage. While it's still cold you are usually only a few steps from being inside the building.
We wore our colors. Even though the Gross Rexmann (aptly named by a vendor we talked to) choked we are proud of the season the Bears had. The jerseys started a few conversations as well.
The wife doesn't have a jersey. Maybe next year.
We started at Ford. The Edge crossover is an interesting car. It rides a little higher (which the wife likes but isn't as thirsty as a truck. Still the wife has a thing for F150's. Someday... unless the Edge steals her away.
This is more my style of truck...
There were Cub Scouts everywhere. Pinewood Derby racing was happening. Great fun for all.
And we were off to Chevrolet.
I've been a fan of the Corvette for as long as I can remember. The Vette is the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 this year. It's a beauty.
The Ron Fellows edition Z06 is more my style. If only I had 80 grand burning a hole in my pocket...
Thing1 is thinking ahead to graduation. He's been thinking about a truck but for him something like the HHR is more his style. It's sharp looking, the price is right, and can haul larger items when necessary.
The new Camaro is a thing of beauty. I was never a huge fan of the Camaro but this just looks awesome! Hopefully Chevrolet will price it right.
The Volt is a pure electric car. 40 miles per charge. ComEd would love me!
We kept wandering. Lots of beautiful cars. Finally made it to the US Army exhibit. As usual it was full of people. The even brought along a couple of choppers.

24 Noon to 1pm
The action finally picks up. Not enough that I get the Jack Bauer Kill Counter right this week but it was an improvement. It was nice to see that Graham Bauer got his just reward. I was expect Jack to do it. I had been thinking that Jack's dad was actually a good guy but, well, I was wrong.
I wonder what else Graham was hiding...

24 on my iPod
I start with a mpeg file of 24. This is recorded with Beyond TV and a Hauppauge PVR 500 TV tuner and is about 2GB in size. I take the mpeg and drop it into Adobe Premiere Elements. After letting the file get indexed I add it to the time line and it looks something like this.
After spending a few minutes removing the commercials I have this. I've removed 20 - 22 minutes from the show.
Now comes a boring part. I have to export the file as a MPEG in 480x480 resolution. On my PC (Athlon 64 3000 o.c.'d about 25%) this takes about 45 minutes. At this point the file is about 850MB.
When that is done I let Videora convert the file into one compatible with the iPod. This kills another 30 minutes and takes the file down to ~260MB.
Once that is done I add the file to iTunes and sync to my iPod.
And play.
Minor note to self - If you have the Cygwin bash shell open Videora won't work. It sees the cygwin1.dll in memory and exits quietly. Turn on the debug option if this happens to you.

I found it interesting that Nadia can't be a terrorist because she's a registered Republican. Couldn't help but notice the slight smile on her face when she started using Milo's credentials to do work. (You know - for a security pro he's pretty stupid) Me thinks she's up to something real bad. Or just has a thing for Milo...
I think Jack's still waking up from being in China. No way he would have fallen for his brothers crap had he been totally with it. It looks like Jack's dad will take the fall/sacrifice himself for Jack to get free and take out his brother - with extreme prejudice. Jack will probably get his wife as a reward.

If he truly believes this why is he a member of the Congressional Black Caucus - given that he stated that we are all Americans and color should not matter? (something to which I whole heartily agree)
Think about it. The CBC does not allow non-black members of Congress to join - even if they represent a significant black population. To me this is a racist organization.
I'd be willing to bet money if a Congressional Caucasian Caucus existed there would be some major meltdowns occurring.

Another Month, Another MG Concert
The wife was on the Montgomery Gentry fan club site last night and someone posted about a MG concert at the Holiday Star Theater in March. Online purchases started today. There was nothing close starting at 12:00 noon. The wife was bummed.
So she's sitting on the couch surfing the Ticketmaster web site and finds three seats in the 4th row - but she only wanted 2. She released them and went back for 2 - nothing close. Frustration was setting in. I headed into my office and hit the TM site. Using a couple of tabs I got holds on 2 individual seats for her and her sister. A couple of clicks later and they were mine.
Tabs are cool!

The Vista Effect
I like Vista. Not enough to run out and buy it but I will move to it at work. Home, if it ever happens, will take awhile.
For those thinking about the upgrade - well this looks like of interesting:
So if I were to buy a $200.00 Vista upgrade license IDC expects that I'll spend $1,900.00 for a new PC, over $1,000.00 on new software, and $800.00 on service providers? The first two make sense. One needs a decent PC with lots of memory and a excellent video card to take advantage of Vista. Software will need to be upgraded. But service providers? Unless IDC thinks that more people will go online with Vista?
Ubuntu is looking better every day.

Ring tones
My Christmas present to the family was new phones. Since I wanted to simplify things I decided to get the same model for everyone - Motorola Razr V3M's from Verizon. We've been with Verizon for 3 years but I dislike they way they remove features from the phones in order to sell more of their own. I was tempted to change services but the wife has a friend who is a Verizon user and they talk alot so we stayed.
A couple of days ago I got a email from Verizon offering a free download of the music manager software. Ok - at least I could put some Windows Media music on the phone to listen to when I didn't have my iPod. So I started thinking - how could I put a mp3 ring tone on using the Verizon software?
Well - you can't. But thanks to the wonders of the Google search engine I came across the AfterDawn forums and some decent instructions for making a mp3 ring tone on a Verizon V3M. Using iTunes to convert a couple of songs to mp3 (O.C. Supertones - Unite and Barlow Girl's Grey) I downloaded Audacity and the Lame MP3 encoder to edit the mp3 files. Followed the instructions from AfterDawn and now when someone from home calls my cell I get the opening horns from Unite. If Thing1 calls I get Grey - as it's his favorite color.
While this works it's way more hassle than it should have been. I guess when the Verizon contract expires we'll look for a carrier that doesn't muck with the phones so much.

Karate testing
Last night was Thing2's test for 3rd degree Orange. It was going to be a long test as all students, regardless of rank, had to do all the moves from White belt on up. She was in good spirits as we checked in and she warmed up. And then we saw Sensei Greg come in. Uh oh!
Sensei Greg was the instructor for the sparring class Thing2 took last year. She ended up getting sat down as she was hitting too hard and mouthing off. I'm pretty sure she was worried that he would remember... I just smiled and said to expect a good workout.
And I was right. By the time she was tested it was 2 and 1/4 hours later. That girl was tired. The higher belts still had another 45 minutes to go.
I think she did pretty good. We'll find out next week if she made it.

Thing1 sent me a link to an amendment to S.1 that he found nasty. It related to bloggers being paid to advocate a position and how they would be treated as lobbyists. Not being a lawyer it didn't look too bad to me. I did send the link to Althouse to see what she thinks. We'll see.
Back to Barack. While I was looking around on Thomas for the information that Thing1 had sent I decided to see what Barack was up to when he wasn't campaigning. Since being elected he has introduced 152 bills/resolution/amendments. One, S.2125, is public law. Three resolutions, S.RES.291 : A resolution to congratulate the Chicago White Sox on winning the 2005 World Series Championship., S.RES.516 : A resolution recognizing the historical significance of Juneteenth Independence Day and expressing the sense of the Senate that history should be regarded as a means for understanding the past and solving the challenges of the future., and S.RES.529 : A resolution designating July 13, 2006, as "National Summer Learning Day" were passed as well.
Not very impressive for a guy who wants (or thinks he wants) to be POTUS.
One resolution jumped out at me. S.CON.RES.53 : A concurrent resolution expressing the sense of Congress that any effort to impose photo identification requirements for voting should be rejected. It looks like his time in Chicagoland has affected him...
Personally - if you want to vote - show ID. Even Mexico requires this. Why can't the United States?

I watched with the wife and Thing2. Payback for ignoring them the last two nights while I watched 24.

Jack's back
Jack is back on tv. The first 3.5 hours had it's ups and downs but that last 30 minutes - wow. Jack's emotions are all over the place as is the action.

Summer Vacation
Two of them: one with the family and one just with Thing2.
The family is going to Tennessee in June. Something about the Country Music Fan Fest or something like that. The wife will have fun and the rest of us, well, we find something to do.
The trip Thing2 and I will be taking is a bit different. Our church's senior high youth leader is working on a trip to the Gulf Coast (probably Mississippi) to work with Lutheran Disaster Relief in rebuilding homes.
Have you ever had something come up in your life that you just felt you had to do? Thats how I felt last night when the leader was describing the trip. Like many Americans I donated money post Katrina and Rita. But that seems distant. Spending a week there actually having a positive impact on someones life? That is just too awesome of a challenge to pass up. I hope everything works out so we can go.
Mississippi in July - should be a bit on the warm side. Probably humid as well. Can't wait!

We Are Marshall
Thing1, thing2, and I went to the movies this morning (the local AMC is $5.00 for the first showing of each movie before noon) and saw We Are Marshall. The true story of the Marshall University football team and it's return to play after a plane crash in 1970 kill all but 3 players and 1 coach.
The story is inspiring and well done. The actors do an excellent job of portraying the anger and hurt that overtook the town and university after the crash and the anger and resentment the return to playing football brought.

Second time in five semesters for Thing1.
When he was a sophomore in high school I promised him a new car for graduation if he had at least a 4.0. He ended up with a 3.947. I ended up paying for college. About a Z-06 worth.

On the way to the movies with Thing1 and Thing2 (We Are Marshall) today I realized that Thing1 is listening to the same music I listened to when I was 21 on the same radio station. Scary
Snakes on a Plane
Yes I'm talking about the much hyped Samuel L. Jackson movie from last year. Thing1 and I watched it last night. I laughed, I (almost) cried. Sure the plot was a little on the stupid side but overall the movie was fun. Yes there are some brutal deaths but some are just so funny - well funny in a unbelievable way. If you watch this movie pay attention at the end as to what is flying.
